The least complicated piece we make

Lily is one piece with no fastenings — straight down from the shoulder, with a rounded neckline and enough room to turn over without anything pulling. It is the nightdress for people who find a two-piece set fussy at three in the morning.

The cotton is a soft, light weave that sits close to the skin without clinging. The neckline is finished so that it keeps its shape through washing rather than stretching into a wider line, and the hem is straight and knee length.

Knee length, and what that means

Knee length here means the hem falls at or just below the knee on most people, depending on your height. It is long enough to be worn on its own, and short enough that it does not tangle around your legs when you turn over in the night.

If you want the hem lower, take the size up — the length moves with the size rather than only the width. If you are between two sizes and wear nightdresses loose, take the larger one, which is the advice we give for sets and nightdresses generally.

• Measure your bust at the fullest point, over light clothing, with the tape level.
• Measure your hip too — this cut is straight, so the hip is what it hangs from.
• Length moves with the size, so if the hem matters more than the width, choose by the length.

Soft from the first wash

This cotton starts soft rather than crisp, so there is no breaking-in period and nothing to get used to. It softens a little further with each wash, and because it is a light weave it dries quickly — useful if you wear a nightdress most nights and want it back in rotation.

• Wash it cool on a gentle cycle and keep it with colours that match.
• Dry it flat or on a line rather than in a dryer, which takes the softness out.
• Iron low if you want the neckline flat. Do not use bleach.

Lily is posted from our warehouse. An order confirmation reaches you by email, and a dispatch message follows. Your delivery window is confirmed at checkout before you pay.

What people ask about Lily

Does the neckline lose its shape?

It is finished so that it holds through washing rather than stretching open. Wash cool, dry it flat, and the neckline comes back to the same line it started on.

Is it see-through?

The cotton is light, but the weave is close enough to be worn on its own. If you are looking for something with more coverage or warmth, Harbour and Meadow are both heavier.

Can it be worn in summer and winter?

It is made for warm rooms and summer nights, and in winter most people layer a robe over it. Cotton breathes, so it does not sit heavy against the skin either way.
