The one for nights you want nothing around your legs
Ash is a night shirt in the older sense of the word — one piece that covers you from shoulder to knee, so there is nothing to pull straight in the middle of the night. The body is cut wide rather than fitted, with a generous drop through the shoulder so the sleeves stay where they are when you roll over.
The cotton is a light, dry-handle weave. It starts crisp and softens over the first few wears, which is usually why it feels better in its second month than its first. Straight hem, no side splits, and a back yoke that keeps the shoulders sitting flat.
How Ash sits on you
Ash is a relaxed cut. It hangs away from the body rather than following it, and the knee-length hem means it works on its own. Nothing here is designed to be tight across the chest, and the drop shoulder keeps the sleeves clear of the wrist.
If you want the same line you already have in a T-shirt, stay with your usual size. If you want more room, or you sleep under a heavy duvet, take the size up — the extra length does not change the shape through the body.
- Take your chest measurement at the fullest point, keeping the tape level all the way round.
- For the length, run the tape from the top of the shoulder down to where you want the hem to finish.
- A night shirt should clear the chest without pulling, so leave room rather than sizing down.
Full measuring notes and the difference between the men’s and women’s cuts are in the size & care guide.
Cotton, and how it behaves
The cotton is light and dry to the touch, with enough body to hold the shape of the placket rather than collapsing around it. It softens as it washes and loses a little of its crispness — in a night shirt that is what you want, because the fabric ends up following you instead of standing off you.
- Keep the water cool and use a gentle cycle, washing it with colours that match.
- Line dry or lay it flat. Heat is what pulls cotton out of shape.
- A low iron is fine if you want the placket crisp. Skip the bleach.

Posting, and sending it back
Ash is packed and posted from our warehouse. Order confirmation arrives by email, and a second message goes out the day the parcel leaves us. Your estimated delivery window is set at checkout, before any payment is taken.
Consumers across Europe have a 14-day right to cancel, counted from the day the goods arrive, under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. No explanation is required.
- Write to us to start it, then post the shirt back within 14 days of that.
- It needs to be unworn, with the tags still on.
- Postage back is at your cost unless we agree otherwise. The refund returns to the card or account you paid with.
If anything is unclear, shop@fuelstoragetanks.shop or +44 7543 892991 reaches us directly.
The things people ask about Ash
Will it shrink in the wash?
Cotton can move a little on a hot wash. Wash it cool and dry it flat or on a line and the length stays where it is. We do not quote a shrinkage figure, because we only publish what is confirmed for each piece.
Is it warm enough for winter?
Ash is a light cotton, so it is built for warm rooms and summer nights. In winter most people wear it under a duvet, or layer a robe over the top. If you want more weight, Harbour is the heavier end of the range.
Do the buttons undo all the way down?
The placket is short — four buttons to the chest, not to the hem. That is enough to open the neck on a warm night while keeping the body closed when you turn over.
