Coast is the pair you reach for when the heating is on and a full pyjama set is too much. The leg is cut wide from the hip down, so there is air moving around you, and the cotton is a light one that stays cool against the skin.

The waist is elasticated with a flat drawstring, which means you can adjust it without undoing the knot you tied last night. Two side pockets, straight hems, and a cut that keeps its line after washing rather than twisting down the leg.

Getting the waist right

The waist is elasticated, so it has give in it either way. That makes the choice simpler than it sounds — pick the size that matches your hip measurement and let the elastic look after the rest, rather than sizing up for comfort you do not need.

If you are between two sizes and you want a looser look through the leg, take the larger one. If you want the waistband to sit closer, take your usual size and adjust the drawstring.

• Take the hip measurement around the fullest point, usually about 20cm below the waist.
• The waist matters less here, because the elastic and the drawstring both adjust after the fact.
• Match the hip figure to the size and let the waistband cover the rest.

Light cotton, and why it matters

A light cotton is what makes these work in a warm room. It is dry to the touch, it does not cling, and it dries quickly after a wash, which matters if you wear them most nights and want them back on the second evening.

• Wash cool on a gentle cycle, with colours that match.
• Dry flat or hang on a line. Keep it out of the tumble dryer, which is what distorts cotton.
• Wash sparingly — the fabric softens with use, so nightly washing is not needed.

Orders are dispatched from our warehouse. You get an email when the order is placed and a second one once the parcel is on its way. The delivery window that applies to your address is shown at checkout.

A 14-day cancellation right applies to consumers across Europe, running from receipt of the goods, under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. Reasons are not required.

• Tell us in writing, then return the goods within 14 days of doing so.
• They come back unworn with the tags on, in a condition we can resell.
• Return postage is your responsibility unless we agree otherwise; refunds go back to your original payment method.

Questions we get about Coast

Will the waist stretch out over time?

An elasticated waist relaxes a little with wear and comes back after a wash. The drawstring is there for the rest — you can tighten it a notch without untying the knot you already made.

Do they shrink in the wash?

Wash them cool and dry them flat or on a line and the length holds. Hot water and a tumble dryer are what move cotton, so both are worth avoiding here.

Are the pockets deep enough for a phone?

They are side pockets on a loose leg, so they take a phone or a key without pulling the waistband down. They are not zipped, so they are for around the house rather than for a walk.
