Fern sits somewhere in the middle — comfortable enough to sleep in, tidy enough that you do not think twice about opening the door in them. The leg is straight rather than wide, cut with just enough room to move, and the waistband folds over softly instead of digging in.

Two side pockets, a soft elastic waist, and cotton throughout. The cut is deliberately plain, which is what lets them pass for something you would wear downstairs rather than only to bed.

If you are between two sizes

The waist is elasticated and the leg is straight, so the fit is forgiving either way. Choose by your hip measurement rather than your waist — that is the measurement that decides how the leg hangs, and the elastic looks after the rest.

If you want a closer line through the leg, stay with your usual size. If you want them looser, or you like a fold-over waist, take the size up. The waistband is deep enough to fold without rolling down.

• Measure your hip at the fullest point. That figure decides how the leg hangs.
• The elastic handles the waist, so there is no need to match a waist measurement as well.
• A straight leg reads loose even on a close fit, so size by comfort rather than by look.

Keeping the shape after washing

The cotton is a mid-weight one, which is what stops a straight leg from going shapeless. Wash it cool, dry it flat, and the leg keeps the line it was cut on rather than twisting or relaxing out of shape.

• Wash cool on a gentle cycle with colours that match.
• Dry it flat or on a line. A tumble dryer is what takes a straight leg out of shape.
• Wash them when they need it rather than every night, since cotton softens with use.

Delivery and returns, briefly

Fern is dispatched from our warehouse. You will get an email confirming the order, and a second one when it goes out. The delivery window for your address is shown at checkout before payment.

Consumers across Europe may cancel within 14 days of receiving the goods under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. You do not need to give a reason.

• Tell us in writing, and have them back with us inside 14 days.
• They must arrive unworn, with the tags attached.
• Return postage is yours unless we agree otherwise, and the refund returns to the payment method you used.

The things people ask about Fern

Are the pockets deep enough to be useful?

They are side pockets on a straight leg, so they take a phone without pulling the waistband down. They are not zipped, so they are for the house rather than for a walk.

Will the waistband roll down?

A deep, soft elastic waistband folds over without rolling, and the cotton has enough body to hold it. If it does start to move, that usually means the size is too small across the hip.

Will they shrink?

Keep the wash cool and dry them flat, and the length stays as cut. Heat is the one thing that moves cotton, so keep them out of a hot wash and away from the dryer.
